Gilding the Resolute Desk

I find myself reflecting on a proposal quite far removed from my own era—President ‘s suggestion to have the Resolute Desk in the Oval Office gilded with gold. Let me share some thoughts.

During my time as First Lady, I was deeply immersed in the responsibilities and decorum expected of those residing within the White House. The office of the President, while a position of immense power, has always been one that required careful stewardship and respect for tradition.

The Resolute Desk itself holds historical significance; it was crafted from the timbers of the HMS Resolute, a British ship sent to aid American explorers in distress during my husband’s presidency. The desk represents international cooperation and friendship between nations—a sentiment that seems almost forgotten amidst discussions of gold plating.

Gold plating such an important piece could be seen as diminishing its historical value and symbolic meaning. It is not merely a desk but a testament to diplomatic goodwill. To alter it in this way might suggest placing material wealth above the enduring values of leadership, diplomacy, and humility that have long been associated with the presidency.

Moreover, the spirit of my era emphasized frugality and simplicity, virtues necessary for guiding a young nation through challenges such as war and economic uncertainty. In these challenging times, symbols matter; they convey messages about our priorities and character as a nation. The choice to gild this desk might send a message that is more about personal indulgence than the collective ideals we strive toward.

I would urge those considering this change to remember the symbolic power of preserving such artifacts in their original state—allowing them to continue serving as reminders of our shared history and the foundational principles upon which this great nation was built. As stewards of our past, it is our responsibility to honor these symbols with respect and restraint.

In closing, while I may not fully grasp all modern complexities, I hope that we can reflect on the messages our actions send, ensuring they align with the values of cooperation, dignity, and humility that have long guided this nation.
